Spotlight on the Artist: Aaron J. Dumalag

For every production, we spotlight one of the hardworking artists who is helping to bring it to life. For Legally Blonde: The Musical, we are spotlighting Aaron J. Dumalag who plays Emmett Forrest.

What do you love most about Emmett, and what do you think audiences will love about him?

I love that Emmett is very true to himself, no matter what stakes are thrown at him. He has strong values and is stern but somehow still quirky. As dorky as his jokes may be, he will continue to tell them. It is such an enjoyable experience to play a kind-hearted, grounded character. I think the audience will appreciate Emmett and Elle’s relationship throughout Elle’s overall journey at Harvard Law.

Can you remember the moment you first fell in love with performing?

I first fell in love with performing in high school, but it was during my first semester at St. Olaf College, where I started as a music education major, that it solidified for me. I was lucky enough to be cast in a play called The God of Carnage, a high-energy, four-person piece in a tiny black box theater. After that, I transferred to UMD the following semester to major in musical theater full-time.

What inspires you, onstage or off?

One of my main sources of inspiration is my family. I have watched them overcome countless obstacles in my life and somehow always maintained a smile on their faces. When I find myself in times of struggle, I know I can count on them for support and strength. My family has also been my inspiration for my comedy, personality, and creative outlets. I also have to shout out the amazing friends and colleagues I have made during my time in Duluth. I don’t think I’d be the performer I am today without their inspiration and support.

Who or what has had the biggest influence on your artistic journey?

My brother, Josh Dumalag. Even though he decided to go into nursing after high school, it was his performance as Lefou in Beauty and the Beast that changed the trajectory of my life. I found so much clarity in my artistic and personal journey through thoughtful conversations with him. He supported me when I decided to audition for my first show and when I decided to transfer to UMD. I wouldn’t be where I am today without him.

What makes Duluth’s theatre community special, and what does it mean to be a part of it?

When I originally came to Duluth, I wasn’t expecting to find such a thriving theater community, and there is an endless pool of art up here. What I love most is how welcoming the community is. I have always had a hard time connecting with others in a new space, but that wasn’t an issue up here. I have learned so much from all the people I’ve met. Whether it was a person here on contract or someone who has been here their whole life, every single person has made an impact on me.
