ABOUT THE SHARK IS BROKEN

In 1974, the filming of Jaws is under way. The film's three lead actors — Robert Shaw, Richard Dreyfuss and Roy Scheider — are stuck together on the boat Orca because Bruce, the mechanical shark used in the film, is broken. Filming has consequently been stalled for several days, turning into weeks. This comedy, co-written by Shaw’s son, explores the three actors' boredom as they as they bond, argue, drink, gamble, and pray for an end to the shoot, not knowing it will change their lives forever.

CHARACTER DESCRIPTIONS

ROBERT SHAW – Male Presenting, age late-40s to 50s. Great English actor and writer celebrated for his work in Shakespeare. Has recently started his American film career, notably in The Sting and The Taking of Pelham One Two Three. A heavy drinker, a raconteur, and in trouble with the IRS. In Jaws, he portrayed Quint, a shark hunter and captain of the Orca.

RICHARD DREYFUSS – Male Presenting, 30s. Beginning his film career and has ambitions of being a great movie star and stage actor. Self-important but deeply insecure. Frustrated with being stuck in an over-budget, overscheduled shoot for a film that seems destined to flop. In Jaws, he portrayed Matt Hooper, a marine biologist hired by Martin Brody.

ROY SCHEIDER – Male Presenting, 40s. A former welterweight champion boxer. Has recently achieved success (and an Oscar nomination for The French Connection) in supporting roles as an “everyman” actor. Much calmer than his two co-stars but nonetheless equally frustrated with the endless shoot. In Jaws, he portrayed police chief Martin Brody.
