Reports to: Producing Artistic Director
Direct Supervisor: Technical Director
Responsibilities include but are not limited to:
- Work with the Technical Director, Producing Artistic Director and Production Manager to evaluate, determine, implement and oversee all aspects of technical/design production needs (including scenic, sound, lights, costumes, props. special effects, personnel and technical equipment needs).
- Ensure production standards meet or exceed Playhouse expectations.
- Create construction drawings and schedules for all Playhouse productions and events.
- Work with the Technical Director to oversee the implementation of scenic designs within budgets and on time. Schedule and lead all scenic construction, including load ins, load outs, and rigging of scenery.
- Ensure a safe and workable environment for staff and performers.
- Assign appropriate tasks to shop team members, volunteers, and over hire carpenters. Coach all team members in proper techniques with an emphasis on safety.
- Plan maintenance, keep material inventory, and schedule improvements for scenic shop, storage shops, and theatre equipment needs.
- Assist the Technical Director and Resident Sound Designer in preparing for outside rentals and events.
- Other duties as assigned.
Experience and Skills:
- Experience fabricating for theatrical productions, preferably in a leadership position.
- The ideal applicant will be proficient with traditional hand and power tools, excel in basic carpentry skills.
- A positive attitude and a passion for creative problem solving.
- Extensive knowledge and experience in scenery construction techniques (drafting), mechanical design, and stage rigging.
- Ability to manage a professional shop.
- Strong verbal, written and people skills.
- Must be able to multi-task several projects, delegate work, and be very detail oriented.
- Work as a team member and maintain a positive and can-do attitude.
