Summer Performance Intensive Program

These two productions are performed by the Youth Repertory Theatre Company. Through the August 7-17, 2014 performance dates, the two productions alternate in true repertory fashion.

Hamlet
By William Shakespeare

HAMLET, son of the king of Denmark, is summoned home from university to see his father buried, and his mother married -- to his uncle. When his father's ghost appears and reveals he was murdered by that very uncle, Hamlet teeters on the edge of madness. Caught in a vortex of treachery and deceit, his family and friends, his love, and his own princely soul. Come experience for yourself, perhaps the greatest English language play ever written - Shakespeare's sublime story of revenge and realization.

Thoroughly Modern Millie
New Music by Jeanine Tesori
New Lyrics by Dick Scanlan
Book by Dick Scanlan and Richard Henry Morris
Original Story and Screenplay by Richard Morris for the Universal Pictures Film

THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE is a high-spirited musical that has all of New York dancing the Charleston. Taking place in New York City in 1922, THOROUGHLY MODERN MILLIE tells the story of young Millie Dillmount, who has just moved to the city in search of a new life for herself. It’s a New York full of intrigue and jazz - a time when women were entering the workforce and the rules of love and social behavior were changing forever.

RENT SCHOOL EDITION & AS YOU LIKE IT & LITTLE WOMEN Perform: August 8-19

Celebrating the 5th Anniversary of The Youth Repertory Theater Company!!

Started in 2008, Playhouse Education Director Kate Horvath began the Youth Repertory Theatre Company.  In the last five years, this company has accomplished the goal of teaching all aspects of a show to the students, including stage direction, backstage assistance, technical requirements, costuming, and front of house.  Alternating performances, the cast opposite the performers runs all the technical aspects, creating a complete theatre learning experience for the students.  At the beginning of July, directors Kate Horvath, Liz Larson, and Lee Gundersheimer start working with over 90 students involved in the three productions.

This year’s productions include William Shakespeare’s As You Like It, Rent School Edition and Little Women the musical.

William Shakespeare’s As You Like It

An entanglement of love, banishment and hidden identities ensues in one of Shakespeare’s greatest comedies, As you Like It.

Rent School Edition

Set in New York City, Rent School Edition is based loosely on Puccini’s La Bohéme.  This rock musical is about falling in love, finding your voice and living for today.

Little Women the Musical

Based on Louisa May Alcott's own family experiences (and novel), this story follows the adventures of the March sisters as they grow up in Civil War America. Six Generations have read the story, this one will sing it!

About our classes:

For the 5 & 6-year-olds, our classes offer an environment for fostering imagination and enhancing self-confidence. These classes are ideal for young kids looking to play with performance. Our series for 7- to 9-year-olds offers fundamental theatre training in a relaxed atmosphere, ideal for elementary students seeking a creative outlet or for those seeking the spotlight! The material for our older groups (10 years and up) is slightly more advanced and geared toward engaging middle and high school students together in the nitty-gritty of stage and film acting.

The Power of Story is the overall theme for the Summer 2011 Children’s Theater Camps.  Through-out time, people have used story to understand themselves and their experience of the world.  We pass along our wisdom and our beliefs through story.  History, whether oral or written, is often converted to story so that while the arguable facts of the event may reshape themselves over time, the essence remains, becoming legend perhaps, or myth.

We are shaping the story of our lives as we live them.  Sometimes, we need to change it up, shape-shift it into one that is greater, more meaningful, whole.  Maybe we do this in order to heal a hurt, or, to overcome fear so that we can courageously do things that are difficult for us.  The Summer 2011 Camp classes offer students opportunities to develop their creativity in the context of theater, stretch and grow their personal and social skills, and have a lot of fun in the process.  We hope you’ll join us!

All classes held at the Playhouse Conservatory (230 W Superior St.)
